Brief History
Originally a small fishing village named Edo, it became the de facto capital of Japan in 1603 under the Tokugawa Shogunate. It was renamed Tokyo in 1868 when the Emperor moved there. The city has survived major disasters, including the 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake and WWII, evolving into a global technological and cultural hub.
